What is ADHD ?

Known as ADHD, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to regulate emotions and attention. Symptoms of the disorder include difficulty concentrating, planning, organizing tasks, sitting still, and staying focused.

In some cases, ADHD symptoms can be detected as early as three years old, although most people exhibit symptoms before the age of 12 years old.

ADHD Types

Three types of ADHD exist: inattentive type, impulsive/hyperactive type, and combined type. Just as the labels imply, types of ADHD are determined by whether you struggle with attention, impulsivity, or both. However, ADHD is not only about being easily distracted or having difficulty concentrating – it is also about being able to regulate and control one’s behavior.

ADHD patients often have difficulty focusing but also tend to hyper-focus and tune out the rest of the world. Also, they may unintentionally interrupt others or blurt out words because they have trouble controlling their impulses.

The symptoms of ADHD are rooted in differences in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, responsible for executive functions along with behavioral and emotional control. The prefrontal cortex of some children with ADHD grows out of their symptoms as they develop, but many have difficulty managing their ADHD as adults.

Our FAQ's.

A correct diagnosis is the first and most important step in getting help for attention difficulties. Unlike other medical issues, ADHD requires a different course of treatment due to its neurological characteristics. You can rule out depression and trauma with a diagnostic assessment by a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Once ADHD is identified, a combination of psychiatric interventions is the gold standard treatment. For optimal outcomes, it is necessary to continue therapy as well as take medication as this is a neurological disorder that affects both the mind and body. Our team at Zen Integrative Care is proud to provide a comprehensive, holistic approach to helping people with ADHD.

Assume your brain is an airplane, and your prefrontal cortex (the area most affected by ADHD) is the pilot.

Most of the time, the pilot does a great job, and everything goes according to plan. The pilot, however, is extremely sleepy when the pilot has ADHD and as a result of the pilot drifting off and nodding off, the plane has difficulty staying on track. This behavior is typical of hyperactive, fidgety individuals, as they are trying to jolt the pilot awake. Therefore, psychiatrists prescribe medication that helps the pilot stay alert, focused, and awake while flying. Specialists at Zen Integrative Care have a team of specialists that can assist you in identifying the best combination of traditional and holistic medicine to get your brain functioning properly.

Upon waking up, your pilot may discover that they have been sleeping their way through certain portions of the pilot training course.

Similarly, growing up with ADHD means you may have missed out on important learning opportunities. As part of our psychodynamic psychotherapy, our psychologist will help you learn some of these essential skills, as well as gain a deeper understanding of who you are as a person as life planning and organization might not come naturally to you.

If you have never been taught how to regulate your emotions properly, you may never learn how to do so. Friends and family members may not have had the opportunity to truly, intimately connect with you. Nevertheless, it does not have to stay that way.

Don’t wait for things to get better on their own if you or someone you love is struggling with attention issues. With Zen Integrative Care, you will receive the help you deserve and be able to get back to living a full, productive life.
